30 minutes on the elliptical, 300 calories, 2.5 miles and a few curls and fly's just to make the arms tight and burn...

Not a bad overall work out today. I am starting to try to alternate some other cardio with the swimming I have been playing with for some variety.

quite depressing how much i have let things slip, but I need to just keep working at it.

unitl next time...

Homeroasted PNG Peaberry at Clifty Falls...

As I sit here in a fantastic room at the Clifty Inn with a great view overlooking the Ohio river drinking a few day rested PNG Peaberry...all I can say is wow. For both the coffee and the view. After hiking miles of trails and walking around town, the legs certainly enjoy resting while taking in the view and the coffee.

PS... roasted some PNG Pea Berry and Decaf Ethiopian looking forward to trying them soon as I drink my Peru la Floridia.

PS... roasted some PNG Pea Berry and Decaf Ethiopian looking forward to trying them soon as I drink my Peru la Floridia.

The challenge of it was that during the roast my watch went dead and I could not leave the roasts, so I had to fly blind. The smell, sound and look of the roast seem to be all right, but as we all know the proof is in the cup... we will see.

a little swim Saturday a.m. and first swim of the year in Tuhey pool this a.m.

I was actually able to motivate both Saturday morning and this a.m. to get some laps in - nothing great, but at least it was something. Saturday I did the laps at the indoor YMCA pool (it is half the length of Tuhey if memory serves me) and this morning I made my first venture to Tuhey - saw my friend Jim and he must have thought the world was coming to an end since he had not seen me in forever.

Lets see how this goes this time... I know I will have a little break at the end of the week since my beautiful wife Dawn and I will be heading out of town for a couple days to go hiking, but hopefully I will get back into the swing of things next week.

Until next time,

Still not back to consistent work outs...

The yard work was a convenient excuse, but that is all it was ... an excuse. I still have not managed to get back on track, but we will see.

On a better note I did receive the coffee I ordered from http://www.sweetmarias.com and I am looking forward to roasting some of the Jacu bird coffee. My coffee hobby is a whole other story. Maybe I will share a littler about it here as well (maybe AI should share a lot since the work out updates are not going well.

Until next time,

Marty

Still flailing ...

Since the exercise is flailing, I better talk about something that is a little more interesting, so ...

I did order a few new coffees from http://www.sweetmarias.com (one of the very best green coffee purveyors. One of which is a Jacu Bird coffee that is proceed the same way Kopi Luwak is (except by a bird).
If I cannot seem to write about the exercise portion of my life, why not coffee.

Until next time,

Marty

working hard in the yard does not leave much time for work outs...

I have not done so well the past week with fitting in my work outs. I pray I improve so I can get everything I need to done.

A special thank you to my friend Jim for some great swim tips on Saturday a.m.

After a little bike ride to the YMCA Saturday morning, I started my swim work out and after a couple laps without the float between my legs and practicing more of a straight leg kick, I was beat and could not keep my stroke consistent. I was luck to have a friend who actually does the full blown Triathlons and other various hard core events. This is the same Jim that did the swim portion of the tri fundraiser we did for Chris last year. He told me that I needed to work some more on my stroke (he was being very nice to even call it a stroke ;o). I need to not extend my arm all the way down, adjust my push from my elbow while bringing my hand up next to my hip, stretch for the reach portion, go slower to work on form and keep my head down. It is better to do this with out kicking so I do not get them all so messed up I drown (and can really focus on trying to do them correctly).

Jim took time out of his busy training schedule ( he is getting ready for Ford Ironman USA Lake Placid and then on to Ironman Wisconsin) to give a few pointers - that means a lot.
I cannot say how much I appreciate my friends and the help they offer on this journey.

Thank you all so much.

My kicking needs work

I did manage to get my swim work out in this morning before work. Ten laps, I have tried for the second time this week to do laps without the float between my legs - much harder.

I was told that it would help if I kicked with my whole leg from my hip rather than just kicking from my knee down. I was told not to lock my knees, but keep my legs straight and kick from my hips. I am greatful for the sugestion - I need all the help I can get.

I certainly don't remember swimming being this hard many years ago ;o)

two work outs last week and two this week with the hopes of a third before the week is out...

Last week I was able to fit in two swim work outs that went pretty well. I am hoping to be able to get three swims in a week with Saturday morning going a little longer than the other two. The stationary bike work outs are all right, but not where I need to be.

last night I did manage to get a little longer work out (same as saturday) 18 laps in 40 minutes, which normally does not happen through the week.

best swim work out so far... I think

Had a little time before outreach this afternoon and took the chance to get a swim in. 13 laps in about 30 minutes. I swam the last two laps with out the foam supports between my legs and actually started to cramp up a little probably not the best idea. The 13 laps felt pretty good, but now as I type my Achilles hurts and my right shoulder still aches more than the rest of my sore muscles. Still plugging away at it ... or at least trying

the pool seems forever busy, but I am still trying to persevere...

I did manageto get in a couple of 500 yard swims this week. Still hitting the 26 - 27 minute mark for swimming the 500 yards.

I also did some stationary bike work a couple times this week about 30 minutes each time. I have worked in a few sets on the dumbells as well.

I am praying for some motivation to start making the hard choices on the nutrition side of the equation I know this is the only way I am going to start to see any progress.

How do you get this fat and out of shape with out it bothering you all along the way?

incremental apathy leads to grand destruction. At least it has for me.
In an effort to start paying a little more attention to what is going on in my life, I made my first real attempt to swim a bit after a number of trips to acclimate to the pool (read - try not to drown). My first effort at 500 yards on Wednesday 1-31-07 was finally completed in about 26 minutes - sad, very very sad.

At least there were no harpoon's thrown while I flailed miserably. I am not looking for more speed or even a greater distance at this time, just consistency.

until next time,

Marty
